Update 07-09-2026: The Swedish Election Authority’s analysis of the early voting error

During the weekend of 4-6 September, the Swedish Election Authority began analysing the error in the early voting process, which we initially believed could affect 4,000 voters. Our analysis is not yet complete, but it indicates that no more than 500 voters are affected. This estimate could decrease further. Unfortunately, it will probably not be possible to identify the affected early votes. If so, they cannot be counted.

What does this mean for me as a voter?

The Swedish Election Authority will not be able to contact the affected voters since we don’t know who they are. However, we will publish a list as soon as possible on val.se, providing details of the relevant voting locations and the times at which the votes in question were received. This will give voters who might be affected the opportunity to vote again at their assigned voting location on election day. If you did not vote at any of the voting locations listed at the times specified, you are not affected by the error.

What happened?

In some cases, an early vote was incorrectly registered using the electoral roll number of the previous voter. This resulted in the first voter being registered twice, while the second voter’s vote was not registered at all.

Should I cast another early vote?

No. If you vote early more than once, each of your early votes will be invalid. If you vote at your assigned voting location on election day, this will be the vote that counts – even if you have already voted early.

How do I know whether my vote is affected?

We are continuing with our analysis work. We will probably not be able to identify whose votes have been affected. However, we will publish a list of the relevant voting locations, and the times at which the error occurred, as soon as possible.

If you did not vote at any of these voting locations at these times, you are not affected.

However, if you know that you voted at one of these voting locations at a specified time, you can vote again at your assigned voting location on election day. Only this vote will then be counted.

Will you contact me if I am affected?

No. We will probably not be able to identify those affected (up to 500 individuals).

Could this affect the vote count?

The vote count process will remain unaffected. It will be carried out in the normal way.

Could identifying the affected voters compromise voter secrecy?

No. Voter secrecy will remain fully protected. When you vote early, a polling staff member puts the ballot envelopes containing your ballot papers in an outer envelope, and seals it. There is a code on the outer envelope. This code is scanned and linked to the correct voting location for vote reception. This code is only used to process and register your vote. It is not possible to link the contents of the ballot envelope to specific voter. As a result, the Swedish Election Authority can investigate which voters are affected, without finding out how any of them voted.

Update 04-09-2026: The Swedish Election Authority has corrected an error that affected early voting

The Swedish Election Authority has corrected an error that affected the registration of some early votes. Since the morning of 4 September, all early votes have been registered correctly.

We understand that many voters who have already voted might be feeling concerned and wondering whether they’re affected.

The Swedish Election Authority will update this page on a continuous basis as further information becomes available.
